First Malaysian-Built Subaru XV Rolls Off the Production Line

In order to better satisfy the local demand for their new Impreza-based XV crossover, Subaru has announced that the first example has already rolled off the production line, at the Tan Chong Motor Assemblies factory, in Segambut. The cars built there are made in collaboration with Fuji Heavy Industries.

The factory will build cars for the Malaysian, Thai and Indonesian markets at a rate of 6,000 units per year, of which only 30% will stay in the country, while the rest of the production will be exported. Now, while the production figure may seem low, it is still enough to satisfy local demand, without having to import or invest too much money.

The CEO of Motor Image Enterprises (main Subaru dealer in Asia), Glenn Tan said: “This development is a significant milestone for us as the ability to locally assemble Subaru cars in Malaysia allows us to leverage inter-ASEAN trade agreements, giving us an advantage in our plans to widen our distribution network [ . . . ] This initiative also shows our capabilities and versatility as an automotive powerhouse, both of which are strengthening our foothold in Asia,”
