First Land Rover Freelander 2 TD4_e Rolls Off the Production Line Today

Land Rover started the production of their most fuel-efficient vehicle, the Freelander 2 TD4_e. The first vehicle of this type was produced at the Jaguar Land Rover factory in Halewood today, March 17 2009.

Land Rover's new Freelander, will feature among other things a Stop & Start system, which makes it the first and only SUV available with this feature. The Freelander 2 TD4_e also benefits from improved fuel economy, from 37 mpg to 42 or more mpg, also achieving approximately 20% fuel savings in heavy city traffic, according to the Land Rover engineer's measurements.

“The Stop-Start Freelander 2 is the first production vehicle to benefit from the massive €800 million investment in sustainable technologies by Jaguar and Land Rover. The Stop-Start feature will be included as standard on all Freelander 2 TD4 manual models, with no associated increase in list prices,” said Land Rover's Managing Director, Phil Popham.

The SUV's new Stop & Start system will automatically stop the engine when stationary, during a red light or a traffic jam, therefore improving fuel efficiency and cutting exhaust pipe emissions. However, the vehicle will start the engine as soon as the driver presses the clutch to shift into first gear. The Stop & Start system will activate every time the ignition is turned on, albeit this system can be turned off manually according to the driver's preferences.

The Freelander 2 TD4_e also benefits of several enhancements besides the Stop & Start system, such as a new gearshift indicator light that will inform the driver that the vehicle is able to operate more fuel efficiently in a higher gear.

The factory at Halewood is also producing the Jaguar X-Type along with the Freelander 2 TD4_e.
