First Indian in NASCAR: Narain Karthikeyan

The first Indian to race in the Formula One (although not very successful), Narain Karthikeyan, is now at his second... first, after he put India on the NASCAR drivers' map this weekend, as he debuted, raced and finished the Kroger 250 race at the Martinsville Speedway.

Karthikeyan managed a somewhat modest 13th place for the newly formed Starbeast Motorsports. Karthikeyan was on the lead lap until lap 200, when a contact with Clay Greenfield spun him around and left Karthikeyan unable to get his car re-fired. He dropped a lap, but was the benefactor of a free pass, returned to the lead lap and finished 13th.

“Well it was what I expected; it was very hard. I tried to learn a lot from the other drivers," Karthikeyan according to Auto123. “The biggest problem is race craft. There is a lot of wheel banging going on and you don’t want to upset people in your first race, but, I stuck it out there and brought it home in 13th."

“If we keep going this way we should genuinely be in the top ten in the next half-dozen races.”

The Kruger 250 was won by Kevin Harvick, who managed an 1-2 with the No. 2 Chevrolet and the No. 33 Hornaday. He led the pack for 187 of 250 and clinched his second Camping Truck win this season in as many starts.

Harvick was seconded by Ron Hornaday, with Brian Ickler, Timothy Peters and Johnny Benson completing the top five.
