Dubbed by the South Korean manufacturer as the "first mass-produced fuel cell vehicle", the hydrogen-powered SUV was delivered to California resident Timothy Bush, the proud owner of the first 2015 Hyundai Tucson Fuel Cell sold in the United States.
To be frank, the eco-friendly model is actually leased for $499 per month, as Hyundai doesn't allow customers to buy the Tucson Fuel Cell. A 36-month lease contract with a $2,999 down payment is the only way to get one. However, this way of business has two big advantages.
Leasees of the 2015 Hyundai Tucson Fuel Cell are offered unlimited hydrogen refueling and 'At Your Service Valet Maintenance' at no extra cost. So basically, $499 per month buys you unlimited drive range. How cool is that? Similar to internal combustion-powered cars, the green machine from Hyundai can be refueled in under 10 minutes and has a driving range of 265 miles (426 kilometers).
“The range and refueling speed of our new Tucson Fuel Cell compares favorably with gasoline vehicles, making them a seamless transition for our customers from traditional gasoline vehicles,” declared Dave Zuchowski, president and chief executive officer of Hyundai Motor America, during the handover event.
Only three Hyundai dealerships from southern California are currently selling/leasing the hydrogen-powered Tucson SUV: Hardin Hyundai in Anaheim, Win Hyundai in Carson and Tustin Hyundai, the latter being responsible for selling the very first model Stateside.
In case you were wondering, the 2015 Hyundai Tucson Fuel Cell is virtually the same car as the Euro-spec Hyundai ix35 Fuel Cell. Both models are propelled from 0 to 62 mph (100 km/h) in 12.5 seconds by a 100 kW electric motor.
