The first automobile jointly-developed by Geely and Volvo will be introduced in 2015, the Chinese-based automaker revealed earlier this week, adding that the new vehicle is already into its development stage.
"We have entered into actual research and development stage and I believe we can see the new product in the year after next," Geely CEO Gui Sheng Yue told reporters in Hong Kong, declining to offer more details on the project.
Geely’s parent company, Zhejiang Geely Holding Group, bought the Swedish firm from Ford Motor Company in 2010, for $1.8 billion, making it the biggest overseas purchase by a Chinese automaker. As a result, Volvo has opened new manufacturing facilities in China.
The new Geely-Volvo vehicle will most probably use the brand new modular platform the two companies are working on. As reported back in May, it will be smaller than the Scalable Platform Architecture and will also underpin a “more spacious replacement for the S40” and a C60 coupe.
