First Citroen DS4 Video: The Challenge

Citroen has launched a six-part series dedicated to the DS4, in anticipation of the impending debut on the European market. The first video of the series has been released by the manufacturer and is available in six different languages.

The first installment of the series describes the challenges faced by the men and women who set out to create a car that mixes styling influences from sports sedans, coupes and crossovers, a “high-stance 5-door coupe”.

It all starts with the wise words of Citroen Range Manager Thomas D’Haussy, who says: “At project inception customers told us they wanted a different king of car. They talked about the coupe. They appreciate the elegance and refinement of coupes and they talked about 4x4s.

He adds that customers appreciate the 4x4’s robust strong and protective side, but they want the svelte silhouette of a coupe, so that was how the idea behind the DS4 was born.

The video then explains the challenges faced by French exterior designer Olivier Vincent, who says he really enjoyed doing his part of the design, as the car is very graphic. In the age of computers and graphic renderings and reconstructions, he chose to start with just a piece of paper and a black pen. He consulted with his colleagues at every step in the process, consulting with them if he was “going to far?” or “Not far enough?”

While watching the first episode of the series, we got the distinct impression that this is a French car through and through. If you want to discover how they came up with the muscular, yet elegant shape of this car, than watch the 4-minute long video for yourself.
