First Chevrolet Volt Delivered in the United States

With Chevrolet Volt deliveries just started, people are queuing up to at least catch a glimpse of the first mass produced and mass marketed extended-range electric vehicle. Retired airline pilot Jeffrey Kaffee on Wednesday became the first customer in the United States to take delivery of a Chevrolet Volt.

Kaffee even returned from his vacation ahead of schedule to take delivery of his Volt at Gearhart Chevrolet in Denville, N.J. Before he purchased the Chevy, the former pilot used to drive a Toyota Prius.

He is the proud owner of the first of 360 Volts being shipped this week from the Detroit-Hamtramck assembly plant. Some vehicles were shipped to Chevrolet dealers in the Washington DC area, while others are on their way to California and Austin, Texas.

His car is actually the second Volt GM to be offered to the public, with the first vehicle to come of the production line at the Hamtramck plant being auctioned for charity. The online auction closed yesterday at 6 p.m. and raised $225,000 which will be directed to the Detroit Public Schools Foundation.

GM will deliver the Volt together with a 120-volt charge cord and the possibility for you to be one of the 4,400 buyers to receive a free 240-volt charging station, including home installation. Future owners will also be assisted by phone or Internet 24/7.

In the United States, Chevrolet Volt has a starting price of $41,000, or $33,500 net of full federal income tax credit. However, General Motors is offering some other financing options, as the company will also lease the Volt.
