Here’s a story that can warm even the blackest of black hearts: firefighters and EMTs with the Pasco County Fire & Rescue department went above and beyond the call of duty by rushing a man to the hospital and then returning to finish his yard work.
As Gene Work’s wife, Melissa, recalls on Facebook, they were both working in the front yard laying sod, to avoid a fine from the homeowner’s association. Gene had sold off his favorite gun to buy the sod, and he knew they were rushing against time to finish the job between the two of them.

Having a heart attack considerably slowed the pace down. Firefighters and an ambulance came and rushed him and Melissa to the hospital, but all the way there, while drifting in an out of consciousness, all he could talk of was the sod that would die if not properly taken care of.

Melissa promised him it would be ok, but she had no idea how she could accomplish that – let alone finish the work to avoid the fine.

As it turns out, emergency responders were listening to their conversation, so after dropping the couple to the hospital, they returned to their home to finish the work.

[My brother-in-law] heard huge trucks driving back down the road. He turned around and saw the fire truck and ambulance had come back,” Melissa writes on Facebook. “He was confused and thought they were coming to check on him.”

Before he knows it, 7 firefighters and EMT's jumped out, put on gloves and said they came back because they knew Gene was in serious trouble and they wanted to lay the new sod so it didn't die. They knew he wouldn't be able to do any work for weeks so they came back,” she adds. “They came back!!! They saved his life, dropped him off and then cared enough to save our GRASS!!

They finished the work and left without waiting for any sign of gratitude. Melissa is now trying to identify them to have them honored properly. The Pasco County Fire & Rescue Department says in a statement the guys were simply doing their job: helping out the community whichever way they can.
