Temptations usually run rampant whenever high-performance cars meet. Sometimes, owners get down to street racing business to prove who’s better. When that happens, those involved will – consciously or not – gamble with their own lives at the very least. On occasion, something really bad does happen.
Even though we constantly preach for safe racing at the drag strip or the local track, we have seen way too many instances of street racing. Sometimes they end well, but – unfortunately – other times they don’t. In the latter case, the best-case scenarios involve a tarnished reputation or a lightly damaged vehicle.

This time around, we’re sadly confronted with an example of the worst-case scenario. According to information shared by the California Highway Patrol - Solano Police Station on January 16th, the driver of a 1998 Chevrolet Corvette lost control of the vehicle at around 120 mph (over 193 kph) and then crashed into a barrier.

The 34-year-old driving the ‘Vette was accompanied by another person, and they both sustained injuries; the former was taken to the hospital with major injuries, while the latter escaped with minor wounds after the car hit the concrete barrier and subsequently burst into flames.

Although the cause of the accident is still under investigation by the authorities, according to the report, the eyewitness accounts described the C5 Corvette as being involved in a classic case of street racing (allegedly with a purple Dodge Charger), when the driver lost control at over 120 mph.

The incident took place during the day at around four o'clock in the afternoon, so visibility probably wasn’t an issue. The CHP – Solano stated on social media the two cars were driving westbound on State Route 37, and the crash took place as the alleged racers were approaching State Route 29.

Hopefully, both the driver and his passenger will fully recuperate from the sustained injuries and understand the consequences of their actions. As for the rest of wannabe street racers, we have just one piece of advice - take a look at the scene of the fiery crash and wise up!
