The Consumer Product safety Commision (CPSC) has issued a recall notice (number 15-706) which is aimed at around 15,400 recreational off-highway vehicles (ROV) manufactured by Honda. If you’re not exactly familiar with the ROV term, maybe SxS (side by side) is an image you’re better acquainted to.
Cutting to the chase, all 2014 model year Honda Pioneer 700 SxS fall under this recall, as they may be at risk of catching on fire. Honda has already received no less than 10 reports which mentioned a fire being ignited underneath the mentioned vehicles. Luckily nobody was injured, and there is no mention on the extent of property damage which occurred.

Silly, somehow stupid cause for Honda Pioneer 700 catching fire

Until now we’ve seen all sorts of serious technical problems which could lead to vehicle fires, from leaking fuel lines and tanks, ruptured hoses, to bad fuel caps and all. However, you’ll most likely smile when you’ll learn the reasons which could lead to the Pioneer 700 catching on fire: dead vegetation and debris being caught between the underside of the vehicle and being ignited by the heat of the adjacent exhaust system.

Dead leaves and branches can be trapped behind the skid plate as the Pioneer 700 passes over obstacles on its trail, and the heat of the exhaust line will eventually dry them out, eventually igniting them. As the vehicle travels forward, the stream of air underneath the SxS brings more oxygen and helps the debris burn, with potentially severe results.

Look underneath your Honda Pioneer 700

Customers are advised to check the underside of their 2014 Honda Pioneer 700 vehicles and remove any debris which may have accumulated in the specified area. They are however advised to also contact their nearest Honda dealer and schedule a free repair.

Authorized personnel will remove the middle skid plate and replace it with another one with a different shape which prevents the accumulation of such materials behind it. Both 2-seater and 4-seater Pioneer 700 are affected by the recall.

Two-seaters have model number SXS 700M2 2AC and serial numbers ranging between VE0225E4000006 and VE022XE4006304, and from VE0284E4000003 to VE0284E4001202. 4-seaters have model numbers SXS 700M4 AC and SXS 700M4 3AC, with serial numbers from VE0204E4000013 to VE020XE4006849 and from VE0268E4000004 to VE0269E4001503, respectively. All numbers begin with 1HF, and the CPSC says that customers can find the: “model and serial numbers are on a certification label affixed to the top rear of the driver's side front wheel well.”

So now, before you head for the wilderness aboard your 2014 Honda Pioneer 700, take your time to check the middle skid plate and make sure you pay a visit to your Honda dealer first. That is, before things become too hot… literally.
