Fiberglass-Bodied 1968 Volkswagen Maxi Taxi Is Not Your Average People Mover

When you say maxi taxi, the first thing that comes to mind is a rather utilitarian design, a car made in such a way as not to be particularly impressive from a performance and visual standpoint, but effective in moving a good number of people from point A to point B.

Volkswagen is a major player in this segment, and has been so for years. The cars presently sold by the Germans in the segment it calls family are, among others, the Sharan, California, Transporter, and Caravelle. All are great for the purpose at hand, but boring beyond words when it comes to styling.

Not the same can be said about the so called Maxi Taxi we have here, one of the several kit cars available out there with the looks of buggy with doors, the styling of 1930s-era cars, and a people-mover name.

Once available as a kit car, this particular build now sells fully assembled, and with about 22,000 miles on the odometer – the vehicle traveled only 100 miles since some restoration work was done a while back.

The VW’s body is of course made of dark green metallic fiberglass, a usual material for this type of builds, and it hides a not-so-perfect tan vinyl interior. Gold-colored body parts, and chrome elements on the wheels, mirrors and headlights further highlight the exterior look.

The kit car is powered by a 1.6-liter 4-cylinder engine, tied to a 4-speed manual transmission and a dual exhaust system.

This particular machine is not the only one of its kind currently available on specialized websites, but it is one of the best-looking, at least as far as the exterior is concerned. Equipped with Am/FM/CD player, power wipers, 15-inch alloy wheels and even removable side windows, it sells for $11,500.

More details about it can be found at this link and in the video attached below.
