Fiat’s Melfi plant, the one which currently builds the Punto will be thoroughly expanded and modernized. The plan is to install completely new assembly lines, in preparation for the production of the next Punto, as well as the possible production of the next Mazda 2.
However, this seems like quite a strange move, considering the fact that Fiat has currently halted production of the Punto for three months, from August to October, in order to avoid excessive stockpiling of cars. The Melfi factory will also get a €3.2-million technical center, in order to better control and manage the production of the upcoming fourth generation Punto.
Work needs to be completed by the end of next year, because 2014 is the year when the new Punto is supposed to enter production, according to the official information. Also, if they manage to also build the Mazda 2, then perhaps the factory will finally be able to work at full capacity, thus minimizing the costs associated with automotive production considerably.
