Italian giant Fiat is reportedly developing a turbocharged V8 diesel engine that will outgun the new 3.0-liter V6 mill fitted in the Maserati Ghibli, a luxury sedan which was unveiled at the 2013 Shanghai Auto Show earlier this month.
According to Car & Driver's Italian sources, the Fiat Group is working on a 4.0-liter V8 turbo-diesel engine that could develop as much as 365 HP and 460 lb-ft (622 Nm) of torque. If these figures are accurate, the new powerplant will offer 90 HP more than Maserati's  turbocharged 3.0-liter V6, that's good for 275 HP and 443 lb-ft of torque (600 Nm).

Developed to return about 30 mpg (7.8 l/100km) combined, the new powerplant will feature Fiat's latest direct injection and Multijet clean-diesel technologies.

If green-lighted for production, the global V8 diesel could be introduced by 2016. However, the report claims this decision will be influenced by Maserati's success with its twin-turbo V6 diesel-powered Ghibli sedan.
