What would you do if you were the grandson of the man who founded Fiat and, thus, one of the heirs of the largest carmaker in Italy? Would you fly to New York, get yourself an escort, lock yourselves in a room full of drugs and alcohol and don't come out until the cash has run out?
Well, probably not, but that's what Lapo Elkann did, a man who finds himself in the fortunate position presented in the paragraph above. The 39-year-old arrived in the Big Apple on Thursday and wasted no time getting in touch with a 29-year-old male escort.
According to the Daily Beast citing unnamed police sources, the pair disappeared into a public housing project in Manhattan where they allegedly consumed illegal substances like marijuana and cocaine as well as alcohol.
Two days later, with cash running low, Elkann came up with the idea of faking his own kidnapping. He informed his relatives that he was being held against his will by a woman and that he would be hurt if they didn't pay a $10,000 ransom. A little low for the heir of an automotive giant if you ask us, but, hey, we just work here, we don't make the rules.
Since his family wasn't just coming out of a two-day drug- and alcohol-consuming spree, they did the sensible thing and called the police. The NYPD played into their game and convinced the two to come to a certain spot to pick up the money.
Elkann was not arrested, but he received an appearance ticket instead over the false reporting of the incident. He will now have to show up in court to settle the matter. As hard is it may be to believe, this wasn't the first time Elkann went on a bender, with the Fiat heir nearly dying of an overdose in 2005.
Since then, however, he appeared to set the record straight having founded the Italia Independent sunglasses company and, more recently, the Garage Italia Customs.
