In the latest Euro NCAP crash tests, the Fiat Freemont proved that it’s more than the sum of its Dodge Journey parts, as it received the maximum five-star rating from the European safety body.
However, we’ll have to delve a bit deeper to see if the Freemont is all that safe. Looking at the 83% received for passenger protection, we’d have to say that the budget crossover isn’t all that good at protection its adult occupants, as protection of the driver isn’t all that impressive.
The steering column presented a hazard for occupants of different sizes and those sat in different positions, and protection for this body area was rated as marginal. Maximum points were scored for protection of the front passenger, with good protection of all body areas. The side pole test also revealed weak protection for the chest, as the dummies recorded rib compression.
As a bit of a saving grace, protection of child occupants was good for both the 18 month and 3 year old. However, the front passenger airbag cannot be disabled, so a rearward facing child restraint cannot be used in that seating position.
The bumper scored maximum points for the protection it offered pedestrians' legs. However, the front edge of the bonnet gave poor protection and scored no points.
The standard ESP system the car comes with was found to be adequate by Euro NCAP.
