Fiat Denies Chrysler Alliance Is Almost Done

Rumors surrounding the Fiat-Chrysler alliance continue to surface and a recent report even claimed that the agreement is "90 percent done". Nevertheless, officials of the two companies continue to deny the speculation, saying that the two sides are still in negotiations and an official statement will be made public as soon as there will be one.

In a statement released today, Fiat says that it is talking with Chrysler over the proposed alliance but the two companies are still far from reaching an agreement.

"No agreement has been concluded between Chrysler and trade unions in the U.S. and Canada and the assertion that the overall agreement has been 90% defined is untrue. The talks remain completely open and it is not currently possible to predict the timing or the outcome," the Italian automaker said according to Autonews.

However, Bruno Vitali, head of the automotive sector of the Fim-Cisl Italian union, told Italian wire service ANSA that the deal is almost ready to be finalized and an agreement is likely to be reached soon.

"The Fiat-Chrysler deal is ready and could be signed as soon as this afternoon," he was quoted as saying, adding that Chrysler finally agreed with the UAW and Canadian Auto Workers over most points of the contracts.

After a few hours, Vitali completely changed his statement and adopting the same "no word about it" strategy like both Fiat and Chrysler.

"There is no agreement regarding the Chrysler issue," he told Reuters by phone.

"But there is a strong push on the part of the American union to close this negotiation in a positive way," he said. "But keep in mind that we are in talks and that it could all fall apart."

Furthermore, UAW President Ron Gettelfinger confirmed that Chrysler and Fiat are still discussing over a potential agreement:

"We are continuing to work toward an agreement that will be in the best interests of Chrysler workers, retirees and the communities where the company does business," Gettelfinger said.
