It certainly looks like more than $860 million invested in the plant Kokomo for the production of fuel-efficient transmissions paid off for FCA, as the carmaker hit a new production milestone.
The facility produced one million eight-speed transmissions so far, in three years after the plant was opened in Indiana.

We're talking, of course, about the TorqueFlite 845RE gearbox, the same used on models like the Jeep Grand Cherokee, Chrysler 300, Dodge Charger, Dodge Challenger, Dodge Durango and Ram 1500.

When first launched, the transmission was said to save plenty of fuel but now the carmaker claims TorqueFlite 845RE was designed to "save vehicle owners more than 700 million gallons of fuel, and reduce combined CO2 emissions by more than six million metric tonnes."

For that to happen, the transmission is fully electronic, as its software adapts the transmission’s shift patterns to driver behavior and driving conditions: acceleration, temperature or electronic stability control activation.

It's also worth mentioning the Kokomo plant produced 300,000 eight-speed automatic gearboxes in 2013 alone and another 400,000 units were built in 2014, a performance that triggered a $266 million investment that was supposed to counterattack the increasing demand.

“This is a significant accomplishment and one that every Kokomo Transmission Plant employee should be proud of,” said Brian Harlow, Vice President - Manufacturing, FCA North America. “They have dedicated themselves to producing a high quality, technologically advanced transmission that is, in part, responsible for the success of some of our most popular vehicles."

Besides eight-speed transmissions, the Kokomo Transmission Plant also assembles four- and six-speed transmissions and has 60 years of expertise in gearbox-making.
