Practicality, practicality, practicality – that's all we ever hear these days. Just about every car company in the world is giving up on small two-door cars in order to focus on four-door coupes or even worse Sports Activity Coupes. But what about soul and looks?
I still remember quite fondly the days when all superminis came with 3 doors, when most VW Golf customers were happy that they didn't have that many hinges on their cars. Nowadays though, just about the only place where you can find two-door coupes is on the internet, as more and more car renderers are doing what big companies don't want to using the magic of photoshop.
The latest such creation is a Fiat 500X Coupe, made by Theophilus Chin. It's a handsome-looking machine that could easily win a beauty contest against the MINI Paceman. This is not the sort of Fiat that would easily get lost in the crowd, which makes me wonder why the company is wasting its time with the Bravo, Punto and that abomination it has re-badged as the Freemont.
The 500X is part of a new breed of Fiats, designed to excite the soul and please the eye. It's like a pair of Levi's jeans you pay extra for just because more attention was payed to the details you love. So maybe the 500X Coupe should be considered the summer shorts of the big 500 family.
So what makes the 500X Coupe so much cooler than the car that looks just like it but has two extra doors? That's like asking why a short dress is sexier than a long one...
