Fiat 500 Mini SUV on the Table

Don't ask us what are they thinking, but the Italian automaker Fiat is apparently working on a mini SUV model based on the already-popular and over-discussed 500. Details are obviously in the very early stage so only a little can be actually said about the car but, according to Italiaspeed.com, the upcoming model will be marketed as the 500 Giardiniera.

Although we're not sure where does this name come from (the term Giardiniera has different meanings in various regions of the world), it might seem the upcoming model will feature a four-wheel drive system, likely to be sourced from Fiat Panda 4x4.

There are still a few things to talk about. For example, the aforementioned source says the Giardiniera could come with a three-door architecture, with a suicide-door format unlikely to join the range. However, the car might still come with roof rails and a retractable canvas sunroof, similar with the one sported by the newly-launched 500 Convertible.

Obviously, nobody knows for sure the official launch date but rumors are pointing that the first models are expected to arrive sometime around 2010. Fiat is reportedly planning to produce around 30,000 units per year.

A thing worth mentioning is that the so-called Giardiniera might become the toughest rival the MINI Crossover, rumored to be marketed as Crossman, could get. But MINI Crossman is again a taboo subject at this point as the only things we got are a bunch of spyshots plus some unofficial specs pointing to various engine configurations that might join the range after all.

However, all we have here is pure speculation so, no matter we're referring to MINI Crossman or Fiat 500 Giardiniera, get back soon to find more info on these subjects.
