Fiat 500 by Tobias Rehberger at Artissima Art Fair

An exclusive preview of the Fiat 500 designed by German artist Tobias Rehberger has been displayed these days at Artissima, Turin’s contemporary art fair, Fiat revealed. The project, designed to benefit the babies of the Sant’Anna hospital in Turin, will be auctioned by Sotheby’s in 2011.

Proceedings from the sale will be donated to the hospital in order to extend the premature babies unit of the neonatology department, directed by Daniele Farina.

The Fiat 500 was donated by Fiat Automobiles, and has suffered several modifications, including entirely new lines and shapes, which made it look like a revolutionary, futuristic sculpture. Rehberger applied special colors and a customized design, in order to make the Fiat 500 an artwork that appeals the world’s most important collectors.

Inside the Fair, the sculpture was placed in the institutional area, right next to a multi-color cafe designed by Rehberger himself.

Tobias Rehberger has won the Golden Lion as best artist in the Making Worlds exhibitions  at the 53rd editon (2009) of the International Art Exhibiton of the Venice Biennale. Rehberger has already created projects related to the car world, working on models by different car producers.

“The art of Rehberger is multi-faceted and multiform. The artist explores different areas, ranging from architecture to design, craft, cinema, music and fashion. Originating from his critical attitude towards the object as a work of art, his works blend form and function, creating a surprising connection with the idea of home,” a company statement reads.

His social projects - interactive, utopian, and playful, are enriched by casual connections and unexpected encounters with different environments and social contexts.
