Europeans over 16 years old could be allowed to drive supermini segment vehicles powered by small displacement engine in the future.Ganni Alemanno, the major of Rome, proposed that the highway code would be modified in order to allow young people over 16 year to drive small vehicles powered by modest units, as motori.it reports.
The official presented the plan during a road safety conference that was recently held in Rome, Italy.
“I think that the highway code should receive an amendment that would lower the minimum driving age for small displacement vehicles like the smart and the Fiat 500 to 16 years of age,” Alemanno was quoted as saying by the aforementioned source.
“With proper speed limiters installed, the minicars are safe for the traffic,” the Major added.
According to Alemanno, today’s contemporary automotive landscape is populated by cars and scooters that can easily reach the speed of a car that belongs to the supermini segment, but don’t even come close in terms of safety. The official’s statement targeted the famous minicars that can be driven without a license in many states of the European Union.
These vehicles have also been targeted by the Italian Minister of Infrastructure and Transport. The official said the state is considering introducing the practical examination as well as as the theoretical test for the use of minicars.
This segment of the transportation industry is an important one, as more and more children living in important European cities are willing to use a vehicle for their daily travel.
