Car design works in funny ways. Often, individual artists working in their pajamas late into the night sometimes come up with ideas that are far better than anything on the road. Never underestimate the power of hot cocoa!
The larger the automaker, the safer it's going to play things in this department. Just look at Volkswagen, Audi or Subaru in this regard.
That little introduction has nothing to do with the Fiat 124 Spider renderings we are showing you. It's just a mental trick I played on myself in case Fiat's actual roadster doesn't come out looking this good.
This is the work of Tigran Lalayan, working from Turin, Italy. That's an excellent place to work from since that's where the headquarters of Abarth is. Rumor had it that the Italian version of the Mazda Miata would be sold as an Abarth.
What are we talking about? Mazda and Fiat signed a memorandum under which the Italians would make their own version of the new MX-5. The two parties had a bit of a falling out, so we can't say for sure what's going to happen. But the original deal was for Fiat to use its own engine and design language, not rebadge the car like Subaru and Toyota did.
Already, the first prototype of the Fiat 124 Spider has emerged for testing in Italy. It's a mule, so we don't know what the bonnet or wings are going to look like. This concept piece appears to take inspiration from the rounded shape of the classic Italian roadsters, combined with elements from the Fiat 500 and Bravo. We especially like the headlights and the simplicity of this silver body.
In place of the 2-liter Skyactiv-G, Fiat is reportedly going to offer a 1.4 turbo, just like the one in the 500 Abarth.
Even though I'm a fan of the KODO design language, this Fiat model is prettier than the MX-5. The way in which the Italian firm carried itself in recent years is not to my liking, but I can only hope that with the success of 124 Spider, we will one day see coupes as beautiful as the 204 and 205 A.
