FIA to Investigate McLaren's Rear Wing on Friday

McLaren Mercedes seem to have no problem inviting the technical delegate of the International Automobile Federation (FIA), Charlie Whiting, to inspect the rear wing of their McLaren MP4-25 challenger. According to British publication Daily Mail, the FIA official will visit the Woking factory during the course of today and check the aforementioned part.

In recent days, Red Bull's Christian Horner insisted that both his team and Ferrari – although the Scuderia did not issue any statement related to this report – have asked the FIA to look into McLaren's rear wing, as it appears that particular design is helping the car gain approximately 10 kph in straight line and reduce drag.

While insisting that their design is legal, McLaren insisted that only Red Bull made an observation on the device.

“We've spoken to Ferrari this morning and they're not aware of any protest either,” said a McLaren spokesman yesterday evening.

Later on, McLaren team boss Martin Whitmarsh also insisted his team kept contact with the FIA constantly in recent months, in order to make sure the design of their rear wing is complaint with the latest technical rules of the ruling body.

“The wing is different and innovative, yes. But we have been in contact with Charlie over a period of several months to check that it complies with regulations. We have been assured that it does,” said Whitmarsh.

Should Whiting decide the rear wing design is legal, it is understood – according to the Telegraph – that Ferrari will not take the matter any further.

“We have no concerns with it (the wing), but we have been invited by the team to view the car so Charlie is going down to have a look,” confirmed a FIA spokesman, according to the aforementioned source.
