FIA to Decide Bahrain GP Fate by May 1

F1 supremo Bernie Ecclestone would like to see the Bahrain Grand Prix secured for the 2011 season of Formula 1 as soon as possible, yet it was now confirmed that the International Automobile Federation (FIA) holds the upper hand on that decision.

In a recent statement released by the FIA's World Motor Sport Council (WMSC), it has been confirmed that a final decision regarding the potential rescheduling of the Bahrain round will be made on May 1st, once the organizers in the Kingdom can provide all the necessary information to the governing body about the political situation in the country.

The World Motor Sport Council asked the Bahrain Motor Federation to communicate by May 1st at the latest if the Bahrain Grand Prix can be organized in 2011,” said the statement from the FIA body.

Needless to say, what the FIA is expecting is for the Bahraini officials to give guarantees that the political situation in the country will not affect a Grand Prix in the Kingdom in 2011. According to the latest reports in the country, that situation might be solved in a few weeks time.

Shortly after the Bahrain Grand Prix was canceled, Ecclestone made it very clear that he will push for a rescheduling of the race somewhere in the late stages of the 2011 season. That was because a mid-summer race would be impossible due to the high temperatures in the country at that time of year.

I don't know how likely it is that there is going to be peace in Bahrain. But if there is, we will find a way,” said Ecclestone in a recent interview with the BBC.
