FIA to Change F1 Points System, Adopt MotoGP Format

Now that the Formula One roster will be extended to 13 teams in the 2010 championship, the International Automobile Federation (FIA) decided to also change the way drivers score their points in the series. The World Motor Sport Council (WMSC) will meet on Friday to talk about these changes, but it seems a decision towards it is quite imminent.

According to several reports in the UK, Formula One could benefit from a MotoGP-style point-awarding system, meaning the race winner could get as much as 25 points at the finish line. There would be a 5-point difference between the Top 4 finishers, after which the points will be awarded in the 8, 6, 5, 3, 2 and 1 point format all the way to the 10th place.

Made up of stakeholders including teams, promoters, suppliers and sponsors, the commission agreed that F1's expansion to 13 teams required a new points system,” said a report from the GMM news agency.

In addition, it is believed the WMSC members will also confirm once and for all the name change of the Brawn GP organization into Mercedes GP.

Returning to the point system topic, it was initially believed the WMSC will proceed to implementing a medal system, lobbied for by the very boss of Formula One, Bernie Ecclestone, last year. The medal system was actually agreed upon by the FIA last year, but scrapped only a few days later following immense criticism from the drivers and teams in the F1 roster.

Such a solution would have proven quite damaging for the series' spectacle in terms of title fight last season, after Jenson Button completed the first half of the 2009 campaign with no less than 6 wins and one podium in his pocket (he would have basically secured the title by mid-season).
