FIA Slams Information Leaking in Crash-Gate

Thursday was a key date in the crash-gate. And it wasn't because the World Motor Sport Council issued a verdict on the aforementioned scandal, but because several information regarding the ongoing FIA investigations have leaked to the media. The Formula One's ruling body quickly reacted to the leaking, arguing that it does nothing but to “derail the outcome of the September 21 hearing.”

The FIA will investigate it (the leaks) thoroughly. It is a very serious matter. Members of the World Council must be able to consider the evidence in the round and speak to those involved and then take an objective decision, not one based on hearsay or leaks,” said a FIA spokesman in an interview with the Mirror newspaper.

In other words, the FIA strongly denies having leaked the information from the Renault dossier to the media.

Among the information appeared in the media – mostly through the internet – yesterday, the most important was, by far, Nelson Piquet's initial letter to the FIA in late July. In the aforementioned document, the Brazilian admitted to all the rumors regarding the Renault fix in Singapore, revealing several details on the plan to deliberately crash from the race.

In addition, telemetry traces showing that Piquet accelerated hard during his spin rather than push the brakes – like any normal driver would do – have also been leaked, joined by the FIA stewards's confirmation that the Brazilian's story is “in large part true”.

Not only the FIA, but also Piquet denied having sent the letter to the media.

We don't have any information about this. We didn't release this and we don't know what it is. I saw the supposed document on the internet but I know as much as you do about it,” said a spokesman for Piquet.

As for Briatore, the Renault boss may miss the first few days of the Italian Grand Prix this weekend, as he is reportedly in Paris meeting with the Renault board and CEO Carlos Ghosn.
