FIA Pushes for Electric Series in 2013

FIA president Jean Todt's plans to create a much greener motor racing environment have been reaffirmed late last week, when the Frenchman set a 2-year deadline for the creation of a new global racing series for electric cars.

According to the Financial Times, Todt will have until 2013 to set the basis of such a series, with races to go on at venue that are currently part of Formula 1's calendar. Wether the stakes will be raised and the new series will run either as a support championship for the Great Circus, or in parallel with it, that's yet to be decided.

The same reports notes that Todt did not take this decision on his own, but was asked by the European Commission to help promote such an idea.

We want as soon as possible to have new categories with new energy,” announced the FIA president. “As much as we can do it all over the world, we will do it,” he added, according to the aforementioned source.

Additionally, the Frenchman also referred to the vocal opposition from Bernie Ecclestone and other Formula 1 figures in regards to the implementation of greener engines for the 2013 season. The most common critic towards the new regulations was focused on the sound of the 4-cylinder turbocharged engines that are to replace the current V8s in the series two years from now.

The racing community are only interested in how to improve performance because they want to win. If you speak to the boards of manufacturers they feel a strong interest to implement the technologies, which are not so obvious for the sporting community because it costs money and research and it doesn't improve performance, and I understand that,” he said.
