FIA Hints at Bahrain GP Reschedule in 2011

The International Automobile Federation (FIA) supports the decision made by the Bahrain Grand Prix officials to cancel the 2011 running of the event due to political turmoil in the country. However, the ruling body stopped short from naming the decision a “cancellation” as it refers to it as rather a “postponement.”

While this is a clear indication that the FIA is looking to reschedule the race sometime in 2011, no details have been shared to the media on this matter.

The Federation Internationale de l'Automobile supports the decision of the Bahrain Motor Federation and the Bahrain International Circuit to postpone the scheduled first Grand Prix of the 2011 season due to be held in the Kingdom of Bahrain on March 11-13,” red a statement from the FIA.

This decision is the outcome of the close co-operation between the FIA, Formula One Management, the Bahrain Motor Federation and the Bahrain International Circuit.”

With Bernie Ecclestone recently hinting that the race might return to the 2011 calendar later in the season – a summer date would be impossible due to the hot temperatures in the country that time of year – the statement emphasized that it will only come down to the FIA to reschedule the race.

The FIA is Formula One's governing body and is responsible for the international calendar as well as all matters of safety relating to the stakeholders involved in Grand Prix racing,” added the statement.

Several media and British journalists have recently slammed the FIA for their poor management of the situation in Bahrain, suggesting that the ruling body reacted too late to the whole crisis. Indeed, the FIA's only statement on the situation in Bahrain appeared today, once all the decisions in the country and regarding the F1 race had already been made.
