FIA Hint Multiple DRS Use in the Future

Even though the Drag Reduction System (DRS) will only be used on the main straight of the Sepang International Circuit this weekend, the FIA's race director Charlie Whiting hinted that the aforementioned device might be ruled for multiple-area use in the near future in Formula 1.

As in Australia two weeks ago, the triggering of the DRS device will only be allowed on the main straight in Malaysia, despite the fact that the Sepang circuit features an additional (back)straight, longer than the start/finish line.

Earlier this week, Ferrari's Felipe Massa had hinted that the DRS may be allowed by the FIA on both straights, raising concerns that overtaking will become an usual sight this weekend. Later on however, the ruling body brought further clarification to the rules and confirmed the DRS will only be enforced on the line before the pit lane.

However, talking to the New York Times and trying to explain the complexity of the device, Whiting hinted that the DRS may be used more than once during one lap in the future, after the world of F1 will have managed to understand the system and develop is properly.

It is something we are certainly going to consider,” admitted Whiting. “It is quite a complex matter to get a detection point, notification point and an activation point for one straight. So we've got to make sure that all the things are working first.

Additionally, following suggestions that the Red Bull RB7's front wing endplates bend more than legal in straight line, the FIA official confirmed that the highly controversial wing has been put to the flexibility test this season and that the RB7's part doesn't break any technical rule.
