FIA Clears McLaren's Rear Wing for Bahrain Race

McLaren Mercedes can leave their alternative bodywork in the garage for the season opening Bahrain Grand Prix this weekend, as it has emerged that the International Automobile Federation (FIA) approved their controversial rear wing design for the race.

The device was initially supposed to be checked out by the FIA technical delegate Charlie Whiting last Friday, but a delayed flight from Brazil messed with his plans for the entire weekend. Therefore, the investigation of McLaren MP4-25's rear wing took place during the course of today, which also marked the scrutinizing session of all the single-seaters ahead of the Sakhir race.

Red Bull Racing were the first ones to make public their worries about the MP4-25's rear wing, as its design seems to enable the car to go faster by approximately 6 km/h in straight line. McLaren's controversial aerodynamic package extends to the upper bodywork as well, as the car features an air inlet that can be opened or closed via a device inside the cockpit – that can be activated by the driver with the help of his left knee.

According to Germany's Auto Motor und Sport, the FIA delegate found nothing wrong within McLaren's aerodynamic package for the Bahrain race, adding that he considers the air inlet as being a “simple but brilliant trick.”

A couple of days ago, it has emerged that the Woking based team brought an alternate bodywork to Sakhir just in case the FIA would rule against the team's initial package. Ferrari had also joined Red Bull in their worries, but insisted that they would not continue any protest to higher courts in case the FIA gives its go ahead to the British team.
