FIA Announce Changes to 2010 WRC, Schedule

The World Motor Sport Council yesterday announced the latest directions for the 2010 World Rally Championship. Unlike Formula One, the WRC didn't arise any dispute between the FIA members and the teams' representatives. Some novelties did appear, however, for the upcoming season of the famous rallying competition.

The first and most important rule for 2010 is that the much-discussed S1600 based cars will not be mandatory. In order “to bring it in line with the engine used in the cars on sale to the public,” the 1600cc turbo engines will make their official WRC debut in 2011.

In addition, the rally organizers in 2010 were given the permission to “mingle” with the stages a little bit, in order to increase the show inside the sport. They will be free to proceed to any change, as long as it's compliant with the directions imposed by the FIA.

Event organisers will be given flexibility to evolve the character of their events to create a unique flavour. Rallies may be run over two, three or four days, but must finish on a Saturday or Sunday. To increase the spectacle, there will be freedom to mix asphalt and gravel surfaces either within a stage or within the itinerary of a day,” said the FIA statement.

In addition, the 2010 World Rally Championship will benefit from a ‘WRC Cup’ for Super 2000 cars, with the condition that all entrants for the cup will have to take part in at least 7 WRC rounds (at least one non-European round).

The FIA also announced the revised calendar for the 2010 season, with Rally Bulgaria being the only event subject to the 2009 Observer’s Report.
