Ferrari’s New Watch Is Inspired by the Iconic D50

There are two categories of automotive inspired watches in this world, the ones you daydream of and probably never purchase, and the ones you like and you get to wear. Ferrari is good at making both, but this time we’re here to talk about their newest model designed for the company’s fans that will hit the market mid-February.

First of all, a bit of history. For those few of you who don’t know (we’re just joking) the D50 in fact started with Lancia and was a Formula One racing car designed by Vittorio Jano in 1954. Innovative features such as the use of the engine as a stressed chassis member, the off-center positioning of the mill to allow a lower overall height and pannier fuel cells made the car quite competitive. Only six were built, two of which are displayed in Italian museums.

It was only after Italian driver Alberto Ascari’s death Scuderia Ferrari would take over Lancia’s shares and would turn the car in the Ferrari D50. Even though some of its features were abandoned, Juan Manuel Fangio still won the 1956 World Championship of Drivers with the modified car.

Ferrari claims the new watch collection pays tribute to this unique racer. The case is 44mm in diameter and presents elongated fins with softly rounded bezel and a glare, typical of the wrist watches of the time. A yellow or red element reminiscent of a “revolution” from 05 to 15 emphasizes the classic design racing-inspired, while the Scudetto logo Corse silver adds a touch of specific style.

In addition to the popular model with red stripe, the collection has been enhanced with new designs for summer sports with yellow stripes and with the Italian flag. The straps in black leather have a thin white or yellow decentralized, highlighted by top stitching in contrasting red or yellow. The dial is crossed by a tricolor strip, reminding of the car Racing Ferrari of the 50s.

Ferrari Store claims the D-50 is equipped with motion precision quartz chronograph and 3 hands. The timepiece is waterproof up to 50 meters/5 ATM and will be available starting mid-February. The price tag is EUR295 ($332), just about the right amount to buy yourself a nice spring present.
