Ferrari Want Overtaking Rules Changed in F1

It seems every F1 race this season has been accompanied by a row of criticism from one team or another (Ferrari sit on top of the list, nonetheless). The ambiguity of the sporting rules have caused several racing “situations” so far, with the last two affecting Ferrari in a very profound way.

Even though they have clearly improved their F10 challenger for the 2010 season, Ferrari were unable to score a great deal of points in the last two races due to some strange calls from the F1 stewards. If the safety car saga in Valencia ended with a few tweaks in regulations from the FIA, the events in Silverstone might also lead to some changes for the remainder of the ongoing season.

In the British Grand Prix, Fernando Alonso overtook Renault's Robert Kubica while short-cutting a corner, after which Ferrari were told that he should let the Pole re-pass him in order to avoid a drive-through penalty. However, by the time Ferrari got that message from FIA's race director Charlie Whiting, the Spaniard had already put several seconds between him and Kubica (not to mention the Renault driver retired seconds later).

That triggered another wave of criticism from Ferrari, followed by a proposal to change the overtaking rules in F1 for the future.

We will discuss an amendment to the regulations: if the race directors are not involved within 3-4 corners afterwards, the manoeuvre is considered to be correct,” Ferrari's team principal Stefano Domenicali was quoted as saying to Italian newspaper La Stampa.

If such a move would eventually have some success within the Formula One Teams Association (FOTA) and the International Automobile Federation (FIA), this would be for the second consecutive time the rules will be changed as a result of Ferrari's frustrations. Asked if the F1 rules should be changed on a race to race basis, Domenicali smiled.

It's a very complex sport,” he added.
