Ferrari Virtual Race Simulator, the Next Best Thing...

... to actually driving a Ferrari. The Italian manufacturer calls Ferrari Virtual Race "a racing simulator that allows you to race a Ferrari (customized for you at the Atelier) around the legendary Mugello circuit". In terms we all can understand, a racing PC game with Ferraris in it.

The game is, for now, free for download here (registration required to access the My Ferrari section) and, if you haven't already navigated away from this page, we have the opportunity to tell you that the game offers you the chance to race, for the time being, only three Ferraris: 599 GTB Fiorano, 612 Scaglietti and 430 Scuderia.

A later version of Ferrari Virtual Race will also include California, F430 and F430 Spider (these models are available for customization in the "My Ferrari" section of Ferrari website, but they cannot be raced). Also at a later time, an on-line game mode will be added and will benefit from "exclusive prizes for the best drivers".

To cut a long story short, we downloaded the game and gave it a spin. The size of the game (76 MB) might be a bit confusing at first, as you might be inclined to believe it's a class B game. Well, this is were the "racing simulator" part comes in.

Any Ferrari you might choose is a wild horse, which will throw you off track at the slightest turn and send you spinning all over the rather well rendered terrain. To blame is, of course, the rear wheel drive of the Ferrari. It will prove to be a very frustrating game but it might, if you have the patience, get better as the hours pass.

We anxiously wait for the multiplayer mode, as for now you can only race with up to seven bots. And for more tracks... And of course the other models... So far, Ferrari Virtual Race is not the next best thing to actually driving a Ferrari.
