Ferrari to Revise Exhaust System on F60

The inevitable happened for Ferrari, as the Maranello-based team have had to change their exhaust system ahead of the 2009 season. An official report was issued by the championship's official site, saying that the Scuderia have already agreed to change their exhaust system, therefore modifying the Ferrari F60's tailpipes.

Following media reports from Germany - motor sport publication Auto Motor und Sport – it was revealed that Ferrari F60's tailpipes were not covered, as specified in the FIA technical rule book. Later on, however, it was unveiled that Ferrari had designed their exhaust system prior to the meeting between the Technical Working Group and FIA technical delegate Charlie Whiting, in which it was decided that tailpipes will be considered part of the bodywork for 2009.

Under the initial technical rule book issued by the FIA, the uncovered exhaust tailpipes were perfectly legal. The FIA have motivated the change in rules by “the fear that teams may come up with tailpipe shapes designed specifically to have aerodynamic benefits,” as announced on the Formula 1 official site.

Ferrari's different interpretation of the rules is not singular ahead of the new season, as it was recently reported by Autosport magazine that Toyota and Williams F1 are using different designs – that aren't compliant with FIA's technical rule book – in terms of rear diffusers.

The international federation is expected to clarify the matter within the few days, but a source within the FIA allegedly told autosport.com that “one design has been approved by the FIA but we cannot confirm that it is the design in question.”
