Ferrari to Push for Schumacher Deal Extension

Although they failed in getting Michael Schumacher back into the Ferrari cockpit this year – it's not like either of the two parties had any saying in that decision, as the failure was caused by Schu's medical condition – Ferrari are confident they'll extend the German' contract beyond 2009.

The 40-year old's advisory deal with the Scuderia runs out at the end of this season, but Stefano Domenicali and Luca di Montezemolo are pushing very hard to keep the German in the Ferrari garage for another few seasons. After all, you never know when another situation like the one this year might arise, and Schu could be tempted to return to racing for Ferrari.

In the way in which Michael responded to our call (to replace Felipe Massa), I believe he still has the will in his mind to be a race driver. If not, he would have hung up his helmet. We want to find a solution, because Schumacher and Ferrari are inseparable,” said Domenicali in an interview with Italian newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport.

In addition, Domenicali insisted that Giancarlo Fisichella's signing of a new reserve-driving deal with Ferrari will not mean Luca Badoer or Marc Gene – currently in the role – will leave Maranello next year. On the contrary, the Italian manager promised the two he will do everything in his power to find them other roles within the Ferrari organization.

We will find a solution not only for him but also for (fellow tester) Marc Gene,” added Domenicali for the aforementioned publication.

Badoer debuted in a Ferrari cockpit at Valencia after almost a decade of test driving for the prancing horse. However, in two outings in a podium-finishing F60 – as proved by Kimi Raikkonen – the 38-year old Italian failed to bring home a single point for Ferrari.
