Ferrari to Form Alternative Series to F1?

Following Ferrari's official quit threat yesterday, the Italian media started making several assumptions on the potential steps of the prancing horse in case it'll actually leave the series. As decided by the Ferrari Board of Directors, the Maranello team will officially withdraw from the series if FIA doesn't revise their budget cap rules.

Italy's Gazzetta dello Sport was the first publication to take Ferrari's threats to the next level, as it said the possibility of creating an alternative series is growing within the Formula One manufacturers. The idea is no news to Max Mosley's ears, as “the alternative series” discussion goes back to the time he suggested a standard engine for F1.

Ferrari were the first to issue an official threat to the FIA, but they weren't the only ones. Taking their example, French manufacturer Renault today issued a statement confirming they will not enter the 2010 F1 championship if the 40M budget cap is not revised. Although yet not official, Toyota and BMW also said they'll turn their back at the Great Circle if Mosley doesn't reconsider the budget limitation.

Austrian backer Red Bull also said it will not join the field in 2010 if the budget cap rule continues to be part of next year's regulations, through the voice of owner Dietrich Mateschitz. As revealed by the RBR & Toro Rosso team owner, only 2 or 3 teams will submit their applications to the 2010 entry list under the current rules.

The aforementioned Italian publication also said Ferrari are now considering a more focused campaign in sports cars (Le Mans Series), while Corriere dello Sport are already linking the prancing horse to the North American racing series.
