Ferrari Takes Blame for Failing Massa

Ferrari took all the blame for Massa’s failure to secure the drivers’ title this year, as team principal Stefano Domenicali admitted it was reliability problems that prevented the Brazilian from becoming world champion in 2008. And he can’t be more right, as Massa lost some pretty precious points in Hungary and Singapore this year due to engine problems and pit-stop failure respectively.

“We're sorry for Felipe, who had an incredible season. We didn't lose the championship in Brazil but before, when we had problems with reliability and made mistakes. We have to analyze the causes, with tranquillity but decisively, to be sure that it will not happen again in the next year. Now we have to congratulate our competitors, because they were really strong and they earned what they achieved,” admitted Domenicali.

He also insisted Massa would have been a worthy winner this year and congratulated his driver for never giving up on the title fight. However, he acknowledged his team’s efforts to retaining the constructors’ title this year and admitted he is now very happy to have ended his first season as Ferrari boss with a championship crown.

“I remember that last summer we asked you for another effort as far as your work was concerned, to try to re-conquer the leadership in terms of performance: we made it and I have to acknowledge that. We had the best possible car and all credit belongs to you,” addressed Domenicali the Ferrari crew on Tuesday. He also insisted on the role of former boss Jean Todt in winning the title this year.

“Our president was always close to us and he always supported us. He asked us eight out of ten at the end of last year and we made it. Todt, who had a new role this year, followed us step by step, helping us with his experience and his knowledge. I can assure you that in this position the pressure is really high and it's important for me to know that they support me and that I can count on your work and your passion.”
