Ferrari Reveal Schumacher to Race for Mercedes

The possibility of Michael Schumacher returning to Formula One is very strong. And it’s not us talking, after being intoxicated with media reports of all kinds in recent weeks, but the very president of the Ferrari organization – and, at the same time, one of Schumacher’s closest friends at the Scuderia – Luca di Montezemolo.

The continuous speculation regarding Schumacher’s future in Formula One was confirmed by the Italian official during his company’s traditional Christmas dinner party on Friday, when he told international reporters that Schu confided in him and told him “there is a very strong possibility” he’ll drive for Mercedes in 2010.

Earlier this week, several reports in Germany and the UK hinted that, during a private meeting between the two, Di Montezemolo told Schumacher that he is free to leave the Scuderia at any time, as his consultancy contract with Ferrari is not binding in any legal way.

The 40-year old German had committed to a 3-year extension of his Ferrari deal earlier this season – during the Italian Grand Prix, at Monza – with his role being more focused on the company’s sports car programme rather than Formula One. However, De Montezemolo tried to joked about Schu’s nearly-confirmed seat with Mercedes, insisting that it won’t be the real Schumacher, but his twin to leave Maranello. The real one will not seize to leave the Ferrari headquarters.

There's another one who looks like him, 40, 41 years old, German, same name and decided to do a new career. They think Michael is a traitor. But I will explain to them it is not Michael but another one. The real Michael is still with Ferrari,” added Di Montezemolo, hinting that some of the Ferrari fans will not appreciate Schu’s move too much.
