Domenicali’s statement was immediately seen as hint that Ferrari may return to the 24 Hours of Le Mans with a LMP1 vehicle, but the Italians have yet to confirm such plans. Now, a new report claims that Ferrari could indeed develop an LMP1 prototype for the 2015 race.

According to Auto Motor und Sport, Ferrari sees the new Formula One format as the perfect environment for a cost-balanced LMP1 program that could make good use of the new turbocharged V6 units. Moreover, a Le Mans comeback is the perfect chance for Ferrari to revive an old tradition and race against the important automakers such as Audi, Porsche, Toyota and Nissan, the report adds.

Ferrari is the third most successful automaker at the 24 Hours of Le Mans, with nine overall victories (behind Porsche with 16 and Audi with 12). However, the company’s last success dates back to 1965.
