It would be difficult to say that Ferrari and Red Bull or Charles Leclerc and Max Verstappen had much of a fight this season.
Red Bull had a few reliability issues at the start of the season but they quickly bounced back. A few races into the 2022 season, they had already established a level of pace and consistency that Ferrari could not keep up with.
Compounding the issue, the race strategy of the Scuderia became the laughing stock of the paddock, with Mattia Binotto taking a lot of flak for his management of the Prancing Horse team. With failures to seize points and claw back the deficit in the championship, Ferrari was looking set to take a fall from grace.
Their results pointed to the possibility of them falling into third place in the Constructors Championship, behind Mercedes, which had a poor season itself. F1 journalist Giuliano Duchessa even hinted at the fact that Ferrari had given up on the 2022 season. With all the arguments against the Scuderia, everybody was ready to write them off for this season and the Tifosi had braced themselves for yet another disappointment.
Red Bull on the other had a string of big wins under their belt, including a masterclass of a recovery drive from Max at the Belgian GP. But as the well-oiled machine they have always been, they did not rest on their laurels. They kept working and improving their car, for this season as well as getting a better understanding for the next one.
In a crazy turn of events, they even managed to do what other teams had thought to be impossible. They introduced a new chassis this weekend, at the Italian GP held at Monza. However, things did not go as one would expect considering Monza is the temple of speed and Red Bull had the best straight-line speed so far. Ferrari managed to fight back and outqualify them. Obviously, this does not mean they will be able to make a comeback as the point deficit is too severe. Still, if they manage to keep their noses clean of blunders, they could still hang on to second place in the championship.
