Ferrari Happy with FIA-FOTA Conclusions

Ferrari's CEO Luca di Montezemolo confirmed yesterday that some of the new rules for the upcoming two F1 seasons include a dramatic chance in terms of engine use as well as decreased pricing for power trains within the paddock. The Italian argued that his Geneva meeting with FIA President Max Mosley ended well and is hopeful that their future encounters on the cost-cutting matter will bring more positive things into the sport.

“Finally, we will have an economical Formula One. Next year we will lengthen the life of engines to three races. This will translate into a total of 25 engines that for the smaller teams will cost 10 million Euros a season,” admitted the Ferrari boss when interviewed by Italian newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport.

Di Montezemolo added that a future meeting between Mosley and all teams' representatives – unlike Geneva, when the three-man meeting also included Toyota's John Howett – should get under way shortly after the Brazilian Grand Prix: “We have decided with president Mosley that we will meet again after Brazil to talk again about limits to the chassis and engines in the future”.

It is believed that future discussions of cutting costs in Formula One will also include themes like re-formating the sport, standardized car parts and less in-season testing. The refueling ban might become an option after 2009, as cars for the upcoming season have already been developed with fuel tanks complying with existing rules.

Apart from the FIA-FOTA discussions on Tuesday, the Italian also referred to the team-orders controversy around the Shanghai race. “I will talk to Mosley, we'll have to end this hypocrisy once and for all. The important thing is not hurt anyone. Other than that, F1 is also a team sport and is one of the most beautiful there is. We're talking about a cyclist who leaves his teammate lead the way from time to time,” concluded Di Montezemolo.
