Ferrari Fans Will Worship Schumacher Again - Berger

Although most of the Italian tifosi are now very happy with Michael Schumacher signing with rival team Mercedes GP, some F1 pundits believe the German will certainly not be booed during the 2010 Italian Grand Prix, at Monza. Returning to Italy in a silver, rather than red, race suit will certainly not look good in the eyes of the Italian fans, but going as far as booing the man who brought you almost a dozen titles in the last decade is surely out of the question.

At least that's how former Grand Prix winner Gerhard Berger looks at the situation, himself being a Ferrarista back in his racing years (between 1992 and 1994). According to the Austrian driver, the fans will feel different of Schumacher once they'll meet him eye-to-eye, in the Monza racetrack.

They (the Tifosi) talk like that now, because they don't have to look him in the eye. When he (Schumacher) stands before them, they will fall to their knees and worship him,” said Berger, in an interview with Germany's Auto Motor und Sport.

Schumacher recently sent an official letter to the Ferrari fans in which he asks them to support his decision to return to racing with another team, while also insisting that Ferrari will always hold a special place in his heart. Schu has spent the last 14 years within the Italian organization, as both racing driver and consultant.

Talking about the 41-year old's decision to quit Ferrari and move to Mercedes, Piero Ferrari – a team shareholder and director and the only living son of founder Enzo Ferrari – insisted that Schumacher did not betray anybody, but just wanted to race in 2010. Had Ferrari given him this opportunity, the German would have never left the Maranello headquarters.

However, Ferrari insisted that replacing one of the existing race drivers for the 2010 season with Schumacher was never even brought into discussion.

I don't believe in sports comebacks, like coaches or footballers going back to the team they were with before. Life goes on,” said Ferrari in an interview with Gazzetta dello Sport, as reported by the GMM news agency.
