A man going by the name of Enzo Ferrari set up shop in 1939 in Maranello. But the mutation from Auto Avio Construzionito Ferrari took eight years to complete, which is why the birth date of Ferrari is officially recognized as being 1947. That year, the first-ever vehicle to wear a bonafide Ferrari badge was completed.
After posting its best ever results in the financial year 2015 (7,664 vehicles sold, net profit of €290 million), Ferrari now finds itself at a turning point. Forced induction is, unfortunately, a must-have in this day and age, as proven by the newly introduced GTC4Lusso T. Be that as it may, the Prancing Horse looks forward to another 70 years of success both on the road and track.

To mark this important moment, Ferrari brought a plethora of special edition models at the 2016 Paris Motor Show. The key visual cue of the anniversary models is a badge, which consists of the enigmatic horse next to “70” written in a large font. Underneath 70, the insignia also reads “1947 - 2017.” Minimalism is what defines this symbol of the passing of time, and that’s perfectly fine from the outfit that perfected the supercar with the F40.

In Paris, the 70th anniversary models Ferrari exhibited come in four flavors: F12 berlietta “The Stirling,” 488 GTB “The Schumacher,” 488 Spider “The Green Jewel,” and California T “The Steve McQueen.” The nicknames and the liveries are not a coincidence. The F12, for example, is an homage to the one and only Sir Stirling Moss and the 250 GT Berlinetta SWB he used in the 1961 Tourist Trophy. The 488 GTB is a nod to Michael Schumacher’s 2003 F1 car.

Then there’s the 488 Spider, complete with a very wacky paint job and gold wheels. According to Ferrari, the topless 488 pays tribute to a 365 P2 racing car owned and driven by a privateer. Last, but not least, the California T in the adjacent live photographs is finished in a similar brown paint as Steve McQueen’s bite-the-back-of-your-hand beautiful Ferrari 250 GT Lusso.
