When the California first came out, back in 2008, some people argued that it was not quick enough to be a proper Ferrari, and that its 4.3-liter V8 wasn’t powerful enough for the car to merit the Prancing Horse badge. At first, the car had 454 hp, and for 2012 it got a 30 hp power boost, and 30 kg weight shedding, which coupled with the already excellent aerodynamics, enabled the it to shave 0.2 seconds off its 0-100 km/h (0-60 mph) time, bringing it down to 3.8 seconds.
Now, as you can see from the video, Ferrari is back in the realm of the turbocharger, fitting one (or two, we don’t really know) to what sounds suspiciously like Maserati’s 4.7-liter V8, currently powering the Quattroporte and GranTurismo in its naturally aspirated guise.
We don’t really have any technical details regarding the new engine, but considering the fact that, if it is the V8, it produces 460 hp without a turbo on the latest GranTurismo Sport, it should easily be over the 500 hp mark. It may very well also be the new turbocharged V6, which Ferrari are also rumored to be developing with and for Maserati and Alfa Romeo.
So, they are back with a turbocharged engine, and being the first one since the iconic and much loved F40 of the 1980s, it needs to be something special!
