Ferrari Boss Expects No 1 Driver Effort from Massa

To avoid any tension in the upcoming 4 rounds of the 2010 Formula One season, Ferrari's very president Luca di Montezemolo spoke privately to both Fernando Alonso and Felipe Massa before this weekend's race at Suzuka. Given that the Scuderia has outspokenly admitted their support for the Spaniard in the remaining stages of the current season, the Italian boss wanted to make sure everybody is on the same page heading to the Japanese Grand Prix.

More importantly though, he was more concerned about Massa's feelings towards this “Alonso is out No 1 driver for now” saga, as the Brazilian recently insisted he will not become a second Rubens Barrichello in the Ferrari garage.

If that happens, I will stop driving,” insisted the 29-year old racer in a recent interview with Germany's Sport Bild, hinting that this will be the first and last season he'll play second fiddle to his teammate Alonso in the championship battle.

Sensing that the atmosphere inside the Ferrari garage might get tensed, Di Montezemolo phoned the Brazilian and assured him that he considers him a No 1 driver not only for now, but also for the future.

Felipe is and will always stay a number one driver for Ferrari. I expect the performances of a number one driver from him - both in the next four races and, with different tires, next year,” said the Ferrari boss prior to this weekend's race.

Those (performances) will be crucial to bring us wins next season and to take important points from our opponents in the battle for this world championship,” added Di Montezemolo.

Massa admitted however that he will try to take as many points off Alonso's rivals as he can in the remaining rounds of 2010, as his mission is to help the Spaniard clinch at least one title for the Scuderia this year.
