Ferrari 599XX Detailed in Geneva

We reported earlier this week that Ferrari went to the 2009 Geneva Auto Show armed with an entire arsenal of high performance vehicles. The company's most looked forward to unveilings are the ones of its 599 range. Amid all its offerings, the Italian manufacturer debuts the 599XX, a version Ferrari calls "laboratorio tecnologico."

Based on the 599 GTB Fiorano, the XX uses the same transaxle layout and engine type. Ferrari tampered with the combustion chambers, the inlet and the exhaust tracts to make the car an extreme track car. Modifications made to these systems, combined with the reduction of natural attrition allows the 599XX to develop a staggering 700 horsepower at 9,000 rpm. A new gearbox shift strategy cut the overall gearchange time to 60 milliseconds to optimize power usage.

The 599XX's defining feature is the "High Performance Dynamic Concept", an innovative concept which was designed to maximize performance by managing the combination of the car's mechanical limits with the potential of its electronic controls. Sporty handling of the car has been improved thanks to the adoption of second generation SCM suspension system. Track usage is also made easier thanks to the new "virtual car engineer", a screen in the car that provides a real-time indication of the vehicle's efficiency.

The car's aerodynamics are the result of numerous wind tunnel tests. The vehicle now boasts 280 kg of downforce at 200 km/h (630 kg at 300 km/h) thanks to the faired-in front underside and to the bonnet mounted air vents. The "Actiflow" system increases downforce or cuts drag, depending on the car's trim cornering conditions. Courtesy of the use of a porous material in the diffuser and two fans in the boot, the air flow is channeled from under the car out through two grilles next to the tail-lights.

The development of high-performance materials used for the body of the 599XX (carbon fiber and composites) has also benefited the carbon-ceramic material braking system. The brake pads are made from carbon-fibber, which means that the calipers are smaller but retain the same efficiency. The system delivers shorter braking distances and is generally more efficient due to the weight saving.

Pricing for the new "technological laboratory" is yet to be released, but as the already exclusivist brand put into the car the latest technology available to the manufacturer, expect the financial crisis you are experiencing to worsen after you buy the car. Whatever that price may be, we are sure it will worth every penny. Especially because starting 2010, Ferrari will be organising a programme of dedicated track events for the 599XX.
