Ladies and gentlemen drivers, we are tail-happy to inform you that Ferrari is set to work its Speciale magic on the 458 Spider. The resulting 458 Spider Speciale will arrive in limited numbers, so you’d better stay focused if you want one.
Various sources reported the Prancing Horse was working on a Speciale incarnation of its 458 Spider, so we contacted a Ferrari source, who confirmed this is in the pipeline. Contrary to what the rumormill indicates, we were told the order books haven’t been opened yet, but this should happen soon.

While the 458 Speciale is offered as a standard model, if we can call it that, the Spider will arrive in limited numbers. While we don’t know the exact production figure, we’ve received the confirmation that both left- and right-hand drive models will be built.

In case the limited edition stuff sounds familiar, that’s because the scheme is borrowed from the car’s predecessor, the 430 Scuderia Spider 16M. Maranello applied the Scuderia treatment to the 430 Spider, while the 16M was there to celebrate the company’s 16th Formula One Constructor Championship title. The world was only gifted with 499 units of the 430 Scuderia Spider 16M.

Ferrari hasn’t been all that loaded with F1 titles meanwhile, but this doesn’t mean we can’t enjoy our track-focused road cars. You have to keep in mind that the Speciale is not exactly the daily driver kind, with this being more of a track toy. Still, the new model was necessary - since the Spider is the 458 to buy, it would've been such a shame for it to miss out on the Speciale play.

Returning to the 458 Spider Speciale, this should follow the steps of the 458 Speciale. This is about 200 lbs (90 kg) lighter than the 458 Italia, but the weight difference could be smaller when comparing the open-top models, albeit not by much.

The 458 Speciale’s diet includes forged wheels, a carbon fiber treatment, the deletion of a few interior elements, such as the floor mats and the glove box, as well as a thinner windows, a plastic rear window and a carbon fiber roof. The last would basically be the only element that would be more difficult to replicate by the 458 Spider Speciale, hence the aforementioned expectations. The new offering is expected to keep the 458 Spider’s aluminum top.

With its foldable metallic top and its (probably) power-operated rear window, the 458 Spider Speciale will make full use of the superb exhaust concert of the upgraded Speciale engine.

At 605 prancing horses, the 4,497 cc V8 in the Speciale comes with the greatest specific power output (naturally aspirated) in the world. What the engineers did was to basically play with all the tech areas of the car, from the gearbox to the suspension and steering.

There’s also a software icing on this cake, in the form of the Side Slip Angle Control (SSC). This makes better use of the car’s E-Diff and F1-Trac control system. We’ve always found the 458 a bit too tail-happy and the SSC does partially solve the issue.

When Ferrari rolled out the 430 Scuderia 16M back in 2008, this was the fastest open-top road vehicle they had ever released. Until the expected Spider version of the LaFerrari arrives, the 458 Spider Speciale will probably hold that title. One-offs not included.

Ferrari is expected to treat us with the 458 Spider Speciale at the Paris Motor Show in October. This is not a bad location if you think that a drive from Paris to Monaco the European supercar capital only takes about 9 hours.
