Just over a week passed since Ferrari took the virtual veils off its latest creation, the so-called 458 Speciale A. The ‘A’ stands for ‘aperta’ which roughly translates into ‘open’. Therefore this is the Spider version of the highly-acclaimed 458 Speciale, you guessed it right.
The Italians brought their supercar convertible to the Paris Motor Show in all its glory and the live photos don’t do it justice, to be completely honest. This thing looks absolutely stunning in the flesh. But what’s all that “Speciale” about it?
That’s because the car was put on a diet compared to the regular 458 drop top and is actually 90 kg (198 lbs) lighter on its wheels, tipping the scale at just 1,340 kg (2,594 lbs - dry weight). Being a convertible, it is however heavier than the Coupe by around 50 kg (110 kg).
Other tweaks make this car a truly special one. The suspension, brakes and steering have been upgraded to be on par with the rest of the tech available onboard.
On the outside the yellow livery is painted on in triple layers and can be had with Blu Nart or Bianco Avus central stripes. Inside, you get to choose your own toys but rest assured that the best materials around will be used.
Coupled with the weight loss program, this makes the 458 Speciale A reach 100 km/h (62 mph) from a standstill in just 3 seconds flat and doubling that will require just 6.5 seconds extra.
This is also Ferrari’s last naturally aspirated engine, all rumors pointing to a return to turbocharged plants in the future, starting with the recently introduced California T model.
Want one? Well, you’ll have to hurry as Ferrari announced that only 499 units will be made and we’re expecting rich folks around the world to be throwing their cash at the Maranello manufacturer in no time.
Less weight than the Spider version
The dropping of the ‘Spider’ nomenclature wasn’t by chance. Ferrari wanted the customers to know that this is not just another model in the range but it’s better than the Ferrari 458 Spider with even more impressive specs. That’s because the car was put on a diet compared to the regular 458 drop top and is actually 90 kg (198 lbs) lighter on its wheels, tipping the scale at just 1,340 kg (2,594 lbs - dry weight). Performance is stunning as well
‘Under the bonnet’ hides the same engine as on the Coupe 458 Speciale, a 4.5-liter V8 delivering 605 horses to the rear wheels and 540 Nm (398 lb-ft) of torque. All the other bits have also been tweaked, just like we’ve been getting used to on Speciale cars.Coupled with the weight loss program, this makes the 458 Speciale A reach 100 km/h (62 mph) from a standstill in just 3 seconds flat and doubling that will require just 6.5 seconds extra.
