With the start of the current F1 season being so close, we were honestly hoping to see an 8th different driver triumphing in the European GP, held on the twisty street circuit around the port of the Spanish city of Valencia.
Despite a less-than-convincing qualifying session, having to start the race 11th, Fernando Alonso slowly made his way up (gaining 3 positions right off the line). On the 34th lap, first-place driver Sebastian Vettel slowly coasted his car to the side of the track, leaving the way open for Alonso who was now in third place to take the lead from 2nd place Grosjean - which he did.
After harassing Alonso for six additional laps, the Frenchman also stopped on the side on the side of the track, and with 17 laps left to go, the Spaniard took the home win. Second place went to Lotus’s Kimi Raikkonen, being followed by Michael Schumacher in his Mercedes. Fourth place was taken by Mark Webber, followed by Nico Hulkenberg and Nico Rosberg.
With the 25 points gained in Valencia, Alonso moves to the top spot in the drivers’ championship, with a total of 111 points, with Mark Webber in 2nd place, with 20 less points. Third place overall goes to Lewis Hamilton, who, despite not finishing the race after having crashed into a wall, is still 3rd, with 88 points, only 3 points behind Webber. Also, with the 15 points gained for his 3rd place finish, Michael Schumacher climbs to 13th place.
In the manufacturer’s championship, Red Bull Racing-Renault is still considerably ahead totaling 176 points, with McLaren-Mercedes in 2nd place with 137 points and Lotus-Renault in 3rd, having accumulated 126 points so far.
